PSHE Our Lives
Intent
At Dunn Street Primary School, we are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and empowering Relationships and Health Education (RHE) curriculum that equips every child with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead healthy, respectful, and resilient lives.
We serve a community where many families face significant social and emotional challenges. Because of this, our RHE curriculum is designed with care, sensitivity, and a strong safeguarding focus, ensuring that all pupils learn how to build positive relationships, look after their wellbeing, and seek help when they need it.
At Dunn Street Primary School, our Our Lives curriculum is designed to help every child grow into a confident, respectful and responsible young person. We aim to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to build positive relationships, stay safe, and look after their physical and emotional health.
We are committed to offering a safe, inclusive environment where children learn about themselves, understand others and develop the resilience needed to navigate an ever-changing world.
Implementation
Our Lives is delivered through a carefully aligned and progressive programme from Early Years to Year 6, ensuring that learning builds year-on-year in a logical, age-appropriate sequence.
Weekly lessons provide structure and consistency, supported by cross-curricular links in subjects such as science, PE and computing.
We use high-quality resources and encourage open, respectful discussion so pupils feel confident to ask questions and express themselves.
Key themes—including friendships, mental wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, online safety, growing up and diversity—are revisited regularly to deepen understanding and support long-term learning.
The curriculum is further enriched through assemblies, themed weeks, safeguarding workshops, anti-bullying initiatives and strong communication with parents and carers.
Impact
By the time pupils leave Dunn Street Primary, they are equipped with the confidence, knowledge and values needed to make safe, healthy and informed choices.
Our children:
-
Build positive, respectful relationships.
-
Understand how to look after their own physical and mental health.
-
Know how to stay safe online and in the wider world.
-
Recognise and value diversity.
-
Approach the changes of puberty with confidence and understanding.
Impact is monitored through pupil voice, lesson observations, behaviour and wellbeing data, and feedback from parents. This ensures the Our Lives curriculum remains aligned, progressive and responsive to our pupils’ needs.
